Nerua is located in a city whose recent history is the most intense and most changeable in Europe. Since being founded in the fourteenth century, Bilbao has been noted for its industry and commerce. This is something that has been adapted to different eras and needs of the city, both economically as well as culturally and socially.

One of the most significant changes in the city happened as a result of an industrial crisis in the 80s, a time when Bilbao succeeded in turning that threat into an opportunity. The Guggenheim Museum by Frank Gehry had much to do with this regeneration of the city, as it gave an unprecedented cultural boost to the area.

The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, a creation by the renowned architect Frank Gehry, is a place that inspires everyone who makes their way there. Built in 1997, from the moment it opened its doors it has been a standard-bearer worldwide for its aesthetics, versatility and service it pays to the city as well as the artists and visitors.

Nerua is situated next to the ArcelorMittal hall that houses Richard Serra's 'The Matter of Time' installation. The main entrance is located next to both Louise Bourgeois' sculpture 'Mama' and the river estuary. The latter plays a particularly important role in the restaurant as the inspiration for its name. The name 'Nerua' can be found in texts which date back to Roman times and is an ancient Latin term for the Nervión river.

Entry to the restaurant is via the kitchen and makes a clear statement as to our ethos. Diners are granted access to an area which has always been hidden from their view and is in fact our best advertisement.

The interior is a neutral, harmonious space that blends the dining room with the kitchen as an extension and interpretation of the space. To achieve this merging of the two environments, the same materials and colours have been used; maple wood and lacquered, perforated, smooth surfaces. Technology and comfort combine to create a unique space.
